We have waited eagerly for the marvel that is Gaborone 2014 to begin. Great effort, hard work and determination has gotten us this far. Putting together the second edition of the African Youth Games has not been a task only for the BAYGOC; it was a national call for every single Motswana to pitch in and help make the games a success. Am proud to say, we are ready for Africa.
The volunteer movement has managed to secure impressive numbers of individuals who will be assisting in different aspects throughout the extravagant games. Let me take this opportunity to say thank you to those that will be giving their time and energy to the games, volunteering is a noble deed indeed. There is something very special about volunteering that can’t be bought or sold. Your dedication to be the welcoming faces, assisting hands and points of direction during the games is greatly appreciated. This are efforts that will sure not go unnoticed.
To the much appreciated volunteers, let us be the warmest hosts this continent has ever seen. With humility and best hospitality practices, let us endeavour to facilitate lasting memories of a warm welcome and a pleasant stay in Botswana. We are known to be a warm, humble and caring people. May these great values be extended to our visitors through the 10 day extravaganza. Let us be polite, cheerful, determined to create a good impression. I urge you all to embrace the principle of Botho. Courtesy and discipline are the utmost desirable values in a young Motswana. It is the simple greetings and exchanging of pleasantries that will go a long and be engraved in the hearts and minds of our visitors. We must leave a long lasting impression in Africa. The athletes will be here to make history, let us also diligently be part of that history.
I ask for unscripted burst of enthusiasm and patriotism as we host 53 nations in our own yard. Let the games be an opportunity to share our cultures, and a chance to fly the national flag up high. Let us all embrace the games and support the organising committee. BAYGOC sees all volunteers as essentials in delivering the mammoth of a task we have been assigned. You are not optional extras but an integral part of Gaborone 2014
